After decades after appearances in comic books, TV shows, video games, and other media, Wonder Woman finally makes her live-action theatrical debut next year in
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Played by Gal Gadot, we’ve seen in pictures, and she showed up during the latest trailer. While many are looking forward to seeing the superheroine in action, comic book writer Grant Morrison believes that the DCCU version of Wonder Woman goes against the character’s roots.
During an interview with Nerdist, Morrison was asked how his graphic novel Wonder Woman: Earth One is going. While giving an update on its progress, he mentioned how he didn’t want to do the "warrior woman thing" like what the movies are doing. Morrison said:
I can understand why they’re doing it, I get all that, but that’s not what [Wonder Woman creator] William Marston wanted, that’s not what he wanted at all! … You see the latest shots of Gal Gadot in the costume, and it’s all sword and shield and her snarling at the camera. Marston’s Diana was a doctor, a healer, a scientist. So I went back to those roots and just built it up again. The writer went on to say that a 7,000 year old civilization of women "wouldn’t still be chopping men’s head’s off" now that they have art, architecture, philosophy, and poetry. Morrison, who has been writing comic books since the 1980s, previously wrote Wonder Woman during his run on
and a few other stories, so he does have experience telling stories about the Amazon princess. One thing worth noting is that we may not see Wonder Woman’s home, Themyscira, until her solo movie, so we still don’t know whether her society is full of warriors, or if Diana is just part of the "warrior class." Besides, she could still have one of these occupations if she wanted to. Heck, considering that she’s reportedly hundreds of years old, maybe she already is a doctor, healer, scientist, etc.
Although Wonder Woman is one of the key characters in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (director Zack Snyder describes her as the "gateway drug" to the rest of the Justice League), little has been revealed about her exact role. Saturday’s trailer showed her in evening wear, presumably disguised as Diana Prince, and later we see action shots of her, including showing off a cool move where she slams her bracelets together and produces an outward energy wave. Since she appears to be in the same environment as other shots of Batman and Superman fighting, my guess is she’s helping the other two heroes battle an unknown adversary (Doomsday, anybody?).
You can see Wonder Woman take on the bad guys when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
