Ned Vizzini: Beloved may-akda Commits Suicide At Young Age Of 32- December 21, 2013

So sad. The author of ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story,’ who wrote openly about his struggles with depression, tragically took his own life in Brooklyn, New York on Dec. 19. He was just 32 years old.

Ned Vizzini was a renowned novel and television writer, penning books like

. But he was also known for writing and speaking openly about depression. He was sadly never able to overcome those struggles, and on Dec. 19 he committed suicide at 32 years old.

Ned took his own life by jumping off the roof of his parent’s home in Brooklyn, New York, his brother Daniel told the 

. A medical examiner at the scene confirmed that Ned committed suicide.

Ned was a teenage prodigy, gaining acclaim at the age of 15 for his humorous essays for the

But Ned’s issues stemming from depression always underlined his work and his persona. He checked himself into a psychiatric ward at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn shortly after

The fact that Ned is gone, and the circumstance under which he died, is just so sad. But hopefully his message about recognizing and fighting depression has been heard, and many others will be saved because of him.

I just finished watching the movie and I saw in the credits that this was based on a true story by Ned Vizzini. So I searched his name up and saw this post that he committed suicide. I burst out into tears. At the end of the movie “Craig” (essentially Ned) says to “Live”. I just couldn’t believe the heartbreaking irony because he died..

It’s Kind of a Funny Story is genuinely one of my favourite books of all time and to hear of this news, no matter how late, has touched me and has made this book feel so much more authentic and real to me. Depression is a disease much like cancer or influenza is and people need to realise this. Much love to his family xx

Learn what the real issue is before you post an ignorant comment like this. You can’t just “deal” with depression, it doesn’t work. If anything “Success and money” helped him get some help so that he fought it for as long as he did. Depression is a serious issue, and people like you make people not want to admit what they have.
