Positive Messages

As some of you might be able to tell, I have been in a very musical mood lately. Along those themes, I wanted to make 2 music countdowns: 1 for Songs and 1 for Scores. I pag-ibig Disney's music, especially from the team of Alan Menken & Howard Ashman. I almost never like covers of DP songs sa pamamagitan ng Disney Pop stars so unless otherwise mentioned, all versions here are the original ones from the film. Here are my rankings for paborito songs:

With A Smile & A Song - Snow White & The 7 Dwarfs (So positive and uplifting plus an excellent message.) "There's no use in grumbling When the raindrops come tumbling Remember, you're the one Who can fill the world with sunshine When you smile and you sing."
Dig A Little Deeper - The Princess & The Frog (So genuine and upbeat plus an excellent message.) "Don't matter what you look like. Don't matter what you wear. How many rings you got on your finger, We don't care. Don't matter where you come from. Don't even matter what you are"

20. I'll Make A Man Out Of You - Mulan
I pag-ibig how this is such a great little masculine song thrown into a DP film! I think it was an excellent diverse song from the lovely madami feminine songs. I think the lyrics are great and they often will get stuck in my head.

"You're a spineless, pale, pathetic lot. And you haven't got a clue. Somehow I'll make a man out of you."

19. Poor Unfortunate Souls- The Little Mermaid
This has always been such a great villain song to me. I pag-ibig the way Ursula delivers it as well as the specific words she chooses. (She reminds me a lot of my ex-Stepmom, especially when she sings this song.) This song really shows off how villainous and manipulative Ursula is.

"I admit that in the past I've been a nasty. They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch."

18. Whistle While You Work- Snow White & The 7 Dwarfs
I pag-ibig how this song shows Snow White's positive and genuine nature. I have heard her described as "manipulative" but I don't see that at all, I think she's a very good and decent person who does not try to exploit others to get what she wants. (Her plea for help to the Dwarfs was simply that, a plea from a 14-ish? taon old maiden who knew that was the safest place for her and she offered to do her part to stay.) Whenever I am cleaning myself, I always tend to hear this song. Work has to be done and it's best done with a positive attitude.

"So hum a merry tune. It won't take long when there's a song to help you set the pace."

17. Almost There- The Princess & The Frog
I pag-ibig Tiana's confidence in this song, towards her goal to open up her own restaurant. I love, respect and admire the fact that she doesn't just expect things to fall into her lap, she is willing to do the work to reach her goal. She doesn't let "trials and tribulations" bring her down because she is stronger than that and chooses not to be a victim. I also pag-ibig the fact that she stands out in her town. She describes the people in New Orleans as being madami laid back and easy going, as mentioned in the line "This old town can slow you down, people taking the easy way But I know exactly where I'm going, I'm getting closer and closer every day." This determination and ambitious spirit is displayed beautifully in this song and I pag-ibig the nod to her father in it as well.

"Trials and tribulations I've had my share. There ain't nothing gonna stop me now cause I'm almost there. I remember Daddy told me "Fairytales can come true You gotta make 'em happen, it all depends on you."

16. Something There- Beauty & The Beast
I pag-ibig how this song shows Belle & the beast starting to fall in love. It's so sweet and sincere. I think it also very accurately shows how true pag-ibig plays out from a budding friendship. At some point you just realize that there's "something there" that's madami than friendship, the chemistry becomes undeniable. The initial judgments/perceptions are gone and a pag-ibig has started to develop in it's place.

"There's something sweet And almost kind. But he was mean, and he was coarse and unrefined. And now he's dear, And so unsure. I wonder why I didn't see it there before."

15. For The First Time In Forever Reprise - Frozen
It's been noted many times on this site but it's worth mentioning again, this song does such a beautiful job at ipinapakita the contrast and dynamic between Elsa & Anna. Their voices blend beautifully together. This song gets stuck in my head often!

Anna: "'Cause for the first time in forever," Elsa: "Oh I'm such a fool, I can't be free!" Anna: "You don't have to be afraid" Elsa: "No escape from the storm inside of me!" Anna: "We can work this out together" Elsa: "I can't control the curse!" Anna: "

14. Belle - Beauty & The Beast
I pag-ibig this entire song! I pag-ibig all of the lyrics and I pag-ibig how well it explains so much about Belle's character. The fact that she went through hardship, that she is misunderstood, that she finds solace in reading, that she has big dreams for herself, and that she is a classic beauty in her town yet doesn't use it to her advantage or rely on it to exploit others. I even pag-ibig all of the lyrics sung sa pamamagitan ng various townspeople in it!

"Now, it's no wonder that her name means "beauty" Her looks have got no parallel But behind that fair facade I'm afraid she's rather odd Very different from the rest of us She's nothing like the rest of us Yes, different from the rest of us is Belle"

13. A Girl Worth Fighting For - Mulan
I pag-ibig how flattering this song is! These men are marching off into war to face some cruel and merciless enemies and protect everyone in their country and the only thing they hope for in return is to find a girl, a love, who makes it all worth it. Some say this song is not romantic at all but I completely disagree. Although I am a woman, I think this song coming from men and their point of view is incredibly romantic. They are willing to face almost certain death with the hopes that a woman will pag-ibig them, appreciate them and respect them for all of their hard work and effort to keep them going. Plus, what they ask for is no where near unreasonable (specific beauty traits, appreciation of battle scars, cooks well, praise and adoration and laughs at his jokes). They also don't just want a girl sa pamamagitan ng force or circumstance, they want to impress and woo her. I love, appreciate and respect this song. I also appreciate and respect the horrible things that lots of males willingly choose to face as well as their uncanny protection and accommodation for females and children (usually strangers) so that they don't have to deal with the "ugly work". I also pag-ibig that the song ends abruptly with the reality of exactly why it is these men need these kinds of hopes, for the horrible things they do face and deal with. Catchy too.

12. Part Of Your World/Reprise - The Little Mermaid
I pag-ibig how beautiful and emotional Ariel's voice is in this. It's kind of heartbreaking for me. She sounds so sincere, so passionate with such longing. I think this song is just gorgeous, musically and vocally. This scene/song usually makes me cry because of Ariel's conviction and how gorgeous the song is musically.

"What would I give to live where you are? What would I pay to stay here beside you? What would I do to see you, smiling at me? Where would we walk? Where would we run? If we could stay all araw in the sun, just you and me.

11. I Wonder - Sleeping Beauty
I pag-ibig how gorgeous Aurora's voice sounds. I also pag-ibig how this song represents Aurora's docile and innocent nature as well as her romantic and idealistic personality. She is so pure and graceful and I think it really comes through in this song. The only way she knows of finding pag-ibig is the same way as the birds: Through song.

10. Let It Go - Frozen
Yes, I pag-ibig this song. I think the music is very beautiful and I pag-ibig the actress' voice in it. I've never really liked the song "Reflection" from Mulan but I'm pretty sure I pag-ibig this song for the same reason others pag-ibig that song. I think it's beautifully passionate and earnest, albeit not smartly written. As a song on it's own, I completely understand why it was such a big hit as it immediately stuck with me the first time I saw Frozen. As far as the film goes though, there are definite inconsistencies with the lyrics here and the film's story.

"It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small And the fears that once controlled me Can't get to me at all! It's time to see what I can do"

9. Listen With Your puso - Pocahontas
I tend to try to find a balance between head and puso but that aside, I pag-ibig this song. I find it to be so incredibly soothing. The few lyrics that are here are beautiful as well.

"Let it break upon you Like a wave upon the sand."

8. If I Never Knew You - Pocahontas
I don't know why, and maybe someone could clear this up for me, but I remember this song being in the movie and playing when Pocahontas goes to see John Smith while he is being held captive. That was when I watched in on VHS as a child though. Now when I see the movie on Blu-Ray, it's not played until the credits. I do pag-ibig the version at the end with the credits though sa pamamagitan ng Jon Secada and Shanice, I think it's done beautifully. Anyways, I always thought this was one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life, especially lyrically. This song really shows the power and beauty of love; how fragile and precious it is. Definitely this song makes me cry every single time I hear it nowadays because it's so beautiful. Perhaps because I feel the same way about my husband. There's a saying that "It's better to have loved and Nawawala then to have not known pag-ibig at all" and I think this song embodies that perfectly. link

7. Belle Reprise - Beauty & The Beast
It's very short but I absolutely pag-ibig and adore it. I can't get enough, it is stuck in my head all of the time. I pag-ibig how it's distilled to the core of what Belle wants: Adventure away from here madami than anything else. It reminds me of the song "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" sa pamamagitan ng The Animals. I pag-ibig the concept behind this song.

"I want much madami than this provincial life I want adventure in the great wide somewhere I want it madami than I can tell."

6. So This Is Love
This stuck always stuck out the most to me from Cinderella, even as a child. It was so beautiful and romantic as well as so pure and innocent. I pag-ibig the way it accurately resembles love. It accurately represents pag-ibig to be transcending and heavenly. Definitely will always be a beautiful and heartwarming classic for me.

"So this is pag-ibig So this is what makes life divine I'm all aglow, Mmmmmm And now I know The key to all heaven is mine"

5. Mother Knows Best - Tangled
This song has been growing on me ever since the first time I heard it! I pag-ibig it so much as I can really relate to it. I think this song perfectly captures the manipulation and deceit of Mother Gothel. I pag-ibig how Mother Gothel plays the "Merchant of Doubt" sa pamamagitan ng saying things like "One way or another Something will go wrong, I swear" she uses the line "Me, I'm just your mother what do I know? I only bathed and changed and nursed you" ipinapakita how ridiculously manipulative she is. None of that stuff means anything because that's her job yet she's trying to make Rapunzel feel indebted to her for being alive. Personally, this song reminds me of my actual mother and it really captures her villainous spirit (and she is similar to Mother Gothel) so I find this song to be brilliantly realistic and accurate.

"Gullible, naive Positively grubby Ditzy and a bit, well, hmm...vague. Plus, I believe Gettin' kinda chubby I'm just saying cause I wuv you."

4. A Whole New World - Aladdin
My all-time paborito Disney duet! I have always loved this song since I first heard it as a little girl and still find it to be such a romantic and magical feeling song. I pag-ibig the way it describes young pag-ibig to be so exciting and full of adventure and mystery. I think it's so beautiful. This is also one of my paborito hasmin scenes where she finally stops being a shrew for a minuto (until the song is over) and just lets herself be happy.

3. Honor To Us All - Mulan
I rank this so highly because I catch myself pag-awit it all the time! I think it is so cute and catchy! I also pag-ibig the dynamic it shows between Mulan and her mother. I also pag-ibig the "recipe for instant bride" and find it to be fairly accurate. I also pag-ibig that it does mostly match up with what the men say they want from women. I just feel like women don't really understand men as well as they used to and I don't think enough mothers give their daughters honest and straight-forward payo despite what feelings it may trigger like they used to. I pag-ibig that Mulan's mother does this for her in this song though. I have the highest respect and appreciation for good mothers and wives so I personally really respect and appreciate this song and the way it holds that role in such high esteem. I see children as the future so I think good parenting is absolutely prime and necessary; One of the most important jobs in society. I still value families as they are still the best environment for children growing up and I pag-ibig how this song speaks to that.

2. Once Upon A Dream - Sleeping Beauty I pag-ibig classical music and I absolutely pag-ibig Tchaikovsky! Ever since I was a little girl I always liked classical music and I loved this song. It always feels like a dream, sweeping me off my feet and making me want to do Piqué turns etc. all over the room. It certainly sweeps me off my feet and I can definitely see why it swept Aurora off of hers as well. It embodies grace and beauty to me.

1. Part Of That World - The Little Mermaid Nostalgia, nostalgia. Not just for the film but for when I felt just like Ariel and I was "ready to know what the people know, ask them my tanong and get some answers". I always wanted to explore and learn new things and have been very curious about other cultures. I think the concept behind this song is so beautiful and inspiring. I also think Ariel's voice is so powerful and feminine at the same time, sometimes it gives me gansa bumps. I adore Ariel's voice completely, it's so gorgeous. I think the music behind the song is equally gorgeous. A timeless classic that I sing/listen to often.

anukriti2409 you have quite unique taste in music, it seems. Beautiful selection, very eclectic! Mine will have more popular songs, I think i prefer songs that affect me somewhere personally rather than its art. I noticed how you haven't mentioned some of the more popular choices. But i think music is something that is very personal to each - how it affects them, how they tune into a certain kind. Great article again! I think I'll do one of song list myself sometime later. Also, i truly wish you'd have mentioned Friend Like Me in your list, its one of my all time favorite. Hate to point out: i think you've replicated explanation of Something There in Almost There as well, by mistake.

MalloMar Such a great list. I usually prefer the film versions of the songs to the pop versions, too. I agree on a lot of these, however, I don't have a specific list myself. I just know that if I did, a lot of these would be included. Man, you make me want to listen to Disney soundtracks. I haven't done that in a while... I like that you included some less popular songs. You're very good at describing why you like these songs. Anyway, as the above users said, edit the Almost There description and your article will be perfect.

wavesurf Ah, we share many favorites and likes ( except for where I really prefer Reflection 1,000 times over Let It Go). It's nice to see you share your tastes in Disney soundtracks with us. <3 Like others have mentioned, I do love " Friend Like Me" sung by Robin Williams, and it's tied with "A Whole New World" on my list. That is...if I actually dissected my list. I'm glad to see that you like most of the songs on Mulan. It's great to find another person who remembers "If I Never Knew You!!!!" People barely talk about this song. I always loved "If I Never Knew You" and thought it was "the core" of Pocahontas. Actually, the only DVD copy to include those scenes and "this missing song" ( sung originally by Judy Kuhn and Mel Gibson in the cartoon) is on the Special Edition DVD. If you've got that version, they still play that scene and song in the context of the whole movie. Just thought I'd share information.... And, yes, I do find Ariel has the sweetest voice, and the strongest enthusiasm for a singing princess. Jodi Benson nailed the "ebullient" and "thirsty" quality of Ariel, and Howard Ashman's lyrics for Ariel are really timeless. That's pretty much why Ariel was a childhood favorite of mine, and is still one of my top favorites as an adult. It's not just nostalgia. It's because the quality is absolutely there: it's both movingly written, and passionately sung. ;)

I thought I mentioned quite a few popular choices (Part Of That World; Once Upon A Dream; A Whole New World; Let It Go) but I suppose you are right that they don't dominate my list. There would probably be more popular choices in my top 20-40. (Hypothetically, if I did one.) I'd love to see your musical countdown if you decide to do one! I used to like "Friend Like Me" more as a child but I've just really grown out of that one. Some tracks have grown more on me more and some have worn themselves out on me as I go through different stages of maturity and life etc. Don't hate to point out my mistake at all, you were the first and you should've, and I appreciate that you did! anukriti2409 art to me means the composition of the music, the instruments used, the singer's voice and its ability to reflect character's personality. In songs, i had always preferred lyrics over music, so sometimes even if i don't like the music but love the lyrics, i still like the song. So if a song affects me personally in the sense that it inspires me, makes me happy, makes me sad, makes me remember an emotion i had experienced at some point in life, its a great song for me. Best case example would be Let It Go and Love Is An Open Door for me. I hate Idina Menzel voice but the message is quite believable and i can relate to it so I like that song. Love is an open door - i just love this line, the message is so powerful that i like listening to this song only for this line. As to the list, i dont think i'll ever be able to rank the songs as i will never be able to pick out which emotion is stronger to feel. But I may put out the list of favorite songs in no particular order.

I am the exact same way but reverse where I can like the music even if I don't really like the lyrics. I do like lyrics too but I do value the "Art" over the lyrics as you said. I really like the lyrics of Let It Go and Love Is An Open Door. I'm kind of dorky so I love the line "Our mental synchronization can have but one explanation." It always stood out to me because I thought it was super cute. Maybe you'd just want to rate by DP film and then just include the tracks you like? I'd like to see your list if you ever make one. I am still working on my "Villain Countdown" list but it should be coming out soon.

Night_Hunter II agree with a lot of your list, and yeah I remember the song If I Never Knew You on the VHS version. I thought I was going crazy when I didn't see the song until the end of the movie. I don't know why they toke it out and put it at the end. I liked it where it was, but I guess the wanted to move the movie along.

laylastepford ^ Thank you! I'm glad you agree with most of my list. I'm also glad other people remember Pocahontas with If I Never Knew You in it as well. I used to own most of the DP films on VHS, which is how I watched them 100s of times and why the details I remember are always from the original disney versions. :)
