Watch Sam Smith Storm The Oscars Stage With His Dramatic
He was every bit as cool as Bond while belting \'Writing\'s on the Wall.\'
Three years after Adele dazzled the Oscars stage with her 007 theme “Skyfall,” Smith brought his monster Bond ballad, “Writing’s On The Wall,” to Sunday night’s show.
It’s been almost six months since we first heard the
theme song, but Smith’s appropriately dramatic performance reminds us why it works so well in the first place. “Writing’s on the Wall” manages to be intimate and epic at the same time, thanks to the building tension of the orchestral arrangement, accompanied by the “lonely heart” sentimentality Smith channels so well.
The Brit singer (looking dapperly Bond-esque and notably slimmed-down, btw) stood solo on the stage as he belted his Best Original Song-nominated number — but with a voice like that, what else could you need?
“Writing’s On The Wall” is vying for the Best Original Song prize at Sunday night’s Oscars along with fellow nominees “Earned It” from
. Lady Gaga and The Weeknd will also be performing their respective numbers on Sunday night, and suffice to say, Smith’s set the bar pretty damn high.
