The Darker than Black OVA occurs after the events of Darker than Black, and covers what happens to Yin and Hei. It also fills in the gap between Darker than Black and the sequel series, Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor.
The series, being only 4 episodes long, is not able to cover much, feeling madami like a movie than a series. Despite this, it still manages to contain much of what makes Darker than Black so great, such as great characters, powerful character development, and fantastic contractor battles.
Despite its short length, the writer, Tensai Okamura, was able to cram in a large cast of rememberable side characters along with an impressive diversity of contractor abilities. From a leaf-eating shapeshifter, to an awkward sa ilalim ng daigdig dealer, to a sensible leader.
The OVA's highlight is the brilliant character development with Hei and Yin. With Yin, it shows her becoming madami human and her struggles with the growing darkness within her. With Hei, it shows him slowly realizing his feeling towards Yin, and his struggles as his world starts to fall apart. While Yin's development is still very well done, Hei's takes center stage as the watcher gets to see Hei's imperfect side, as he is powerless to save what is most precious to him, and unwilling to make the sacrifice that is demanded of him.
The OVA is also able to squeeze in some spectacular contractor fight scenes. The final battle is especially entertaining, featuring exploding helicopters, walls, and bubbles, among other things.
The only let-down of this OVA was the clique "I'm the bad guy, and I'm going to change the world" plot. This, however, is hardly detrimental to the pangkalahatang story, and the watcher will probably be madami disappointed sa pamamagitan ng the short length then this oversight.
Summary: Thou being only 4 episodes long, the OVA is packed with memorable characters and exciting contractor battles. The highlight of the ipakita is the character development of Yin and Hei, of which Hei's takes center stage as the watcher gets to see Hei's weak side, both in power and in personality. Thou the plot is a little bit of a disappointment, the OVA is still well worth the watch and will help smooth the transition from Darker than Black to the sequel series.
