How can Bolin be an Earthbender and Mako a firebender if they're brothers?

I'm not sure if this was ever addressed in the ipakita (forgive me if it was), but how is this possible? I don't think I've come across another case like this anywhere in the awatara universe.

I don't remember if they brought it up in the ipakita but they'd have to have some Earth Kingdom blood and some apoy Nation blood. Probably their parents were apoy and earth.
