she never actually seemed happy with angel it was all drama drama drama
but when she was with spike she seemed to have fn but then again the majority of their relationship he had no soul, and she was all moody from being sucked out of hell so you know....
Plus what does she get at the end of it all? He tries to rape her...or because it's Spike is that all ok?
I get the question and I still think Angel was better for her because all his acts were selfless. He made the decision to break-up with her and leave because he knew she couldn't and that was better for her in the long run. Spike never saw that far ahead.
angel did actual kill people including her friends
why do you think she had that itch?
and finally him sleeping with anya was just as much anya's, xander and buffy's fault as it was spike's
Ok, you keep telling me that in Season 6 Spike was in love with Buffy and how good he was for her etc, etc. Soooooo if this is the case why does he sleep with one of her friends and why does he attempt to rape her?
Spike sleeping with Anya was Buffy's fault...ok so are all you ladies telling me that if one of your exes went out and slept with one of your close friends you'd blame yourself? That's just nuts!
Was it also Buffy's fault that Spike tried to rape her? Hmmmmm, can't say I'd agree with that one, that's the old thuggish "she was asking for it" mentality.
I'm glad you brought up Angel. Angel didn't actually do any of those things, Angelus did. Two completely different characters and played as such by Boreanaz. Angelus never claims to love Buffy, he loathes her and is in fact evil...hence the heap of guilt Angel feels in Season 3.
Spike clearly doesn't love Buffy in Season 6 because he sleeps with one of her close friends then tries to rape her...these are not acts of love. Season 7 Spike can love Buffy all he wants for me, but getting to that point is all messed up.
that the one thing i don't like about joss writing he's always said that vampires are very smilar to their former selves even angel says it at one point but then angel/angelus is too completley different characters
sorry for biting lol
and that's a sexist remark, the whole deserving thing, if a lass had been dumped (like anya) and slept with someone for confort people feel sorry for her, a guy does it (spike) and he's the bad guy (i know he is actually a bad guy but you know what i mean)
However, the question was who WAS better for Buffy, not who would have been better, and Buffy was unhappy and disgusted with herself almost the entire time she was with Spike (and in season 7 she wasn't really "with" him), whereas Angel was her first true love and looked out for her and was everything a boyfriend should be, except of course when he was evil.
The main difference that I felt between the two relationships was that when she was with Angel, she was her own person. This is why she was able to be strong and kill him when he was evil. With Spike, she had this neediness (I'm not just talking about the sex here) and she wasn't strong enough to be by herself. I mean, letting him try to rape her??? It was a bad relationship, and even though it had the potential at the end to be something better, I'll go with Angel here.
Personally-- and yes, I'm biased by my huge adoration of James-- I think that the infatuation-type bliss in the Bangel relationship would have worn off and Buffy would've been left looking for something more. Spike is that something more, and if they would have been given more time, I think Spike really could have been good for Buffy, and she good for him in return. As shown in seasons 6 and 7, they supported and confided in each other beautifully. While flawed, their relationship had major potential.
Angel and Cordy [Er, Cangel? Corgel? Angdy? XD What's the terminology here?] would've worked out beautifully. She pulled him out of his self-pitying century slump, while I think any relationship with Buffy would've ended in him resorting back to his annoying, broody ways.
If Angelus raped buffy all you Bangel fans would be all "no that wasn't angel, angel loves buffy that was angelus he didn't have a soul, evil blah blah blah."
BUT when EVIL UNSOULED spike ( i will call him Spikus! lol sounds like a cactus! BUT come on he needs a name or it's just confusing =S) raped buffy everyone keeps saying OMG spike raped buffy he can't love buffy! Well it wasn't Spike! It was Spikus so Spike still loves buffy......
AND just like Angelus didn't ruin the Bangel ship when he tried to end the world and kill her Spikus didn't ruin the Spuffy ship when he raped her.
totaly agree whit this one.. he raip here because she couldnt love him (as much as she loved angel) Even when he was Angelus she had difficulty killing him , but she would kill spike any time. Whit chip in his head or whit out chip.
Angel left her when she needed him the most, she was always crying her eyes out over complications in their reletionship. Spike made her feel safe of herself and him. For her own sake, she grew the most when she was with spike.
didnt you see the episode in the first series of Angel when he turned human?? Angel and Buffy were so happy together!
I think the move from WB to UPN really segregated the two shows at one point.
However, there are some important things that need clarifying.
1. Angel and Angelus = totally different beings.
2. Angel is very good for Buffy, he loves her selflessly and makes her happy, despite the drama.
3. Angelus is most certainly not good for Buffy. (Understatement of the century haha!)
4. Equally, soulless and ensouled Spike are totally different entities. (Haha I like the Spike/Spikus, it certainly avoids confusion!)
5. HOWEVER, the only relationship Buffy ever had with Spike/Spikus was with Spikus. By this I mean a romantic (very loose use of this word since this is season 6 Spuffy I'm talking about!) relationship, not a friendship/potential romantic relationship.
6. As such, within the parameters of the question, which I take as referring to relationships rather than in general, Spike & Buffy in season 7 is irrelevant, since they were not together.
7. Therefore, season 6 Spuffy is what is relevant to this question.
8. Since this was a violent, degrading, unhealthy relationship that made Buffy feel disgusted with herself and so ashamed that it further alienated her from her friends, since she cried so much when admitting to Tara what was going on, since Spike did not love her (due to being soulless, not due to any character default. He loved her as much as he could given that he didn't have a soul, but he did not love her. You don't rape someone you love. I think the discussion of Anya & Spike isn't proof that he didn't love her, this sort of thing happens, it's painful and bad, but it happens - two people comforting each other and ending up having sex despite the fact it will hurt people & they love other people, not each other, but were just seeking comfort. But the attempted rape, which he would have continued with and finished had Buffy not had the power to stop him, so there's no point defending him with 'he didn't actually rape her' - he wanted to and would have if she hadn't been so strong - is proof that he didn't love her. Not his fault, as he was a soulless demon, but true nonetheless. Again, his feelings of "frustration, confusion, anger" are NOT excuses for this, there is no excuse for this, and Buffy did not "ask for it", that would be an incredibly sexist and offensive insinuation. The reason for him doing this is that HE DID NOT HAVE A SOUL. But you can't use his lack of soul as an excuse for this, as a justification, and then disregard its importance when it comes to his ability to love.
At the end of the day, Buffy and Spike had potential to be a lovely relationship if he had not died in season 7. But they weren't, and the only relationship they had was harmful to Buffy, emotionally and psychologically, and cannot be called a good thing for her. Saying that Spike fulfilled her needs - well, sex isn't the be all and end all of a relationship, not a healthy, happy, romantic one, and he certainly didn't fulfil her emotional needs. Whereas Bangel, despite its drama, made Buffy happy. She loved Angel, he loved her, selflessly, and they never truly got over each other. Clearly, that is the better relationship.
Yes, Spike LOVED her in season six. Yes, he also attempted to rape her and slept with one of her friends. But through all this, he didnt have a soul. Angel did. Spike did love her, but because she wasnt returning the love, he didnt understand. Without a soul and being used to being evil, he tried to TAKE it. thats what evil people do. They dont tend to think things through. You say that Angelus was a completely different character from Angel. Why shouldn't it be the same with Spike? After all, the problem was "do they have a soul or not?", right? Also, Angelus did state that he loved her a couple of times in the earlier seasons, i think it was in "innocence". Killing, torturing, and taunting people is not a act of love either. Even Joss Whedon said hat the Spuffy love was real :) Spike loved her so much. I have a bunch of reasons and i actually posted them somewhere else, but they're pretty long so I'll leave them out :) I don't think that Buffy was ever too HAPPY with Angel. He also said that in 200 years, Buffy was the only one he loved--so he later goes to screw Darla (Which, by the way, is just as bad with Spike and Anya) and gets her pregnant, and then fall head over heels for Cordelia.
Basically, I think Spike and Buffy were a great couple. :)
Sorry if I was huffy, just stating my opinion.
Love isn't easy, hun.
Anywho, my choice. *Angel* obviously.
1 he respected her and loved her more than spike ever did
2 he is stronger and he is always there for her
3 buffy loves him more than spike
4 she hated spike for more than 5 years
5 he even died and he loved her so much that he would do anything for her
6 when he left her he was only thinking what was best for her he just does want to put her through the same thing she did at the end of season 2
7 he wanted to give her a normal life or as normal as posible
8 plus buffy kissed him in the end of s7 and she kept him out of the war because she didn't want to risk losing him
try to top that
"I killed Angel! Do you even remember that? I would have given up everything I had to be with— I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life. And I put a sword through his heart because I had to." e5s7
And also in the last episode she hints to Angel that she sees him in her future when she becomes "cookies"
And the only reason Angel left Buffy was so she could have a normal life. Spike could never do that because he isn't selfless enough. Now some people will say that he died for her in chosen, but he had no idea that would happen so that doesn't count. And even if it did Angel would do it in a heart beat(well figuratively)
She doesn't love Spike in season 6 and she just respects him like a friend in season 7...
Anyway, if Angelus would rape Buffy I'd be mad!!!!! You can't rape a person!!!! And you can't say he didn't do something wrong because he was souless, and you can't say he fought to have his soul back (he did it just to kill Buffy!!!!!!).
How can you tell us: oh, poor little spikey, it's not his fault if he tried to rape the woman he says to love, but Buffy's because she asked him to rape her because she wanted him to..."
I don't understand all of this speeches...
1 He did all he could and took care of Dawn while she was gone as a promise
2 he is the strongest and he will always be there for her
3 buffy needs him more than Angel, like she said
4 he was able to changed her mind and change her in general in the course of 5 years
5 he DID do everything, including fight and die for her and the world
6 when he left her he was he was giving up on her, unlike spike staying like a real man. He recognized he was wrong, thats the only manly thing I thought he did.
7 he knew she would never have a normal life being the slayer, so he worked around that making it as easy on her as possible
8 plus buffy chose him after kissing angel and knowing spike was the one she wanted in the end of s7 and she kept him in the war because he was the biggest champion she knew in her life and he only could protect and save her and the world. She loved him so much as to throw away her selfishness. Thats what he also did.
'try to top that'
I just did ;)
Anyway, lets compare Angel WITH a soul and Spike WITH a soul and their relationship with Buffy. Spike was always by her side, he fought for the right thing without asking anything in return. And he ended up dying for her. Angel... left her after S3. Was not there through her depression, was not there through her problems, was not there with her during the final battle. Buffy dealed with Angel leaving her in S3 and didn't stop him from leaving. But in S7 she stopped Spike from leaving, because in her own words she was not ready for him to be away.
So my answer is Spike.
PS: as to "more than anyone and anything" quote. Buffy said lovED. Past tence. It doesn't mean she can never love anyone as strongly and even more.
Anyway, I don't take the comics seriously and even if we stick to the show all I see with Bangel was an idealized love story of two people that broke up when things got hard and barely interacted after that. What I see with Spike/Buffy was two people being there for each other and taking care of each other in S7. Spike became even more important for Buffy than all her friends in the last season. He died like a hero for her and her VERY last words on the series where "I love you", "Spike". In my opinion, she loved both Spike and Angel, but Spuffy is the relationship I prefer and find more appealing to me.
