Regardless of Buffy, I never got the whole Cangel thing. Cordelia, first of all, was never really believable to me on Angel, because he character differed so much from what it was originally. And it wasn't like Wesley where there was a slow gradual change that came from terrible events happening---it was a sudden shift that just happened when she crossed over to Angel. Bad writing if you ask me.

So yeah I just didn't get it at all. Now, his relatioship in season 5 with that werewolf lady was fine. That made sense to me.

I was kind of angry about it at first, as with Spuffy etc, but at the end of the day they needed a love interest for Angel, and I do love Cordy as a character. Same with Spike. When I watched both relationships I hated them, but with hindsight they were each important to the shows and had some great moments. Bangel forever though! I can really only see Cordy and Spike as kind of temporary distractions from Bangel to be honest.

I couldn't grasp why the writers felt Angel needed a romantic relationship to give him happiness when just having friends and people to care for around him seemed enough to me. Bangel luvers need to get over the fact that bangel is old hat and boring as hell.

I don't know if I would say I was "mad" at Angel the way this pick implies... but I was a little annoyed with him just because I love Cordelia's character so much. I love Bangel but I recognize that David Boreanaz got his own show and in order to draw in viewers that often means creating a love interest. I just think that it would have been much more sensible to focus more on Darla than Cordelia. Angel left Buffy and Sunnydale because he loved Buffy more than any creature has loved anything in this world and he wanted her to have the best life possible. He also knew that Buffy's deepest desire was to live a "normal" life (which is why the BtVS's series finale is so phenomenal!) and Angel wanted to be able to give that to her as much as possible... which meant she couldn't be in a relationship with a vampire. This was one of the purest and truest acts of love: sacrifice.
But Angel didn't do that for Cordelia. He didn't love her enough to stay away... so it makes me mad that Angel would disrespect Cordelia in that way. It made sense when Darla was more of his love interest because she was a vampire, then human, and then vampire again and so Angel could actually have some sort of "future" with her.

But then again Angel and Cordelia never officially became a couple so maybe Angel was trying to resist (even though it didn't seem that way in Cordelia's last episode). Cordelia's character became very similar to Buffy's character- both heroes, fashionable, brave, witty, whiney, spunky, caring...etc. Cangel's relationship was modeled after Bangel's relationship... the dynamics of their relationship was so similar (unlike Bangel and Spuffy which are sooo different). I didn't have such a problem with Cangel but I just felt so attached to the original couple (Bangel) that I couldn't fully accept their offspring (Cangel)

I've never took Cangel too seriously. However, as a die-hard Bangel fan I admit it was difficult to me to watch Angel series, because it was Cordelia there not Buffy. Answering the question, I think deep down he knew that being with Cordelia is not something that could have last. That is why he did not consider how their future would be like, because deep down he didn't think they have a future. Buffy was everything he always saw, and the reason he left Sunnydale, all of his concerns where because he knew that she's someone he could spent the eternity with, if only that would be possible. It's crazy to think that any other woman could have an impact on him like Buffy had, or that he could love someone else as strong as he loved Buffy.

Cangel is one of the reasons I've only bothered buying the first series of Angel, I know I wouldn't rewatch the rest often enough for it to be worth it.

I remember when I finished Buffy I was a little bit confused if I should watch Angel, my feelings about Bangel are that strong, that is why it's truly painful for me to watch them apart, or whats worse being with someone else. After the first episode I was like "God...I don't think I can do it...how am I go through all of this ??" lol.
Season one is my fave, and its the best one to me for a simple reason: Buffy shows up, plus Angel himself is pretty much as he was in Sunnydale, and thats the version of him I love the most. With every next season, he was changing, he was becoming more human? I mean his behavior. But I guess that's what comes with the territory when its the show about him, he had to become more open whatever that means...

Agree. That would be interesting, and perfect solution for Bangel fans ;)...thats a pity they chose to go with the 'mainstream' kind of idea. This show had so much to talk about that the Angel's new relationship area could have been successfuly avoided.

I get the concept they were going for with Cangel - they were trying to parallel the original idea for Bangel (Angel only came back from Acathla hell because of the spinoff). He'd fall in love with her but she'd become evil/be possessed with evil, and he'd have to kill her. It just had to be changed a bit because of Charisma Carpenter's pregnancy.

The whole Cangel thing is still annoying though.

Yup, it's interpreting the show from different perspectives, not only as Bangel fans/viewers but also trying to figure out what were the creators' ideas, and why they chose certain solutions. Still looking at the whole thing from a viewer's point of view, just from what we seen on screen, one thing is clear here, no other woman could fill Buffy's shoes in Angel's heart. That's what remained through all 5 seasons of 'Angel'. Buffy was always there. I think Cordelia's death was just another sign for Bangel, she was out picture so Angel was free again. If it would come to Buffy's final decision there is no doubt she would choose Angel over Spike. The Bangel kiss in 'Chosen' and Spike seeing this made it once again clear. No matter what you will do, you can't split the two.
And going a little bit off topic it was always making me laugh how fans of Spuffy were defending this 'relationship' by claiming that Spike loved Buffy already without a soul. It was not love, it was obsession, he tried to rape her, he had this room covered with her pictures like a psycho, and BuffyBot. That's not love that's unhealthy and sick obsession over someone - typical stalker, in real life every woman would call the police :P Just sayin'.

It was stalkerish craziness, and as you say, in reality it'd frighten them if it happened to them or anyone they knew. What makes me really laugh then is that they go on to say Spuffy is the more realistic relationship..... realistically, Spuffy would be an abusive relationship.

The jealousy Angel showed towards Spike throughout season 5 of Angel made it clear he still loved Buffy. They even needed an episode focusing on it (The Girl In Question) near the end before the two could work together! If Angel had truly loved Cordy romantically, wouldn't be too deep in mourning for her to be romantically jealous over another woman?

In that case thanks but BIG NO for such a 'reality' ;) Bangel is romantic and magical, their feelings for each other are so deep, and so strong people who never been through something like that don't understand it. For example: Xander who was most of the time in the team 'hey! lets get rid of Angel.' But I think that's why it touched me so much when in 'Amends' it was Xander who offered his help in Angel's case.

Both Buffy and Angel never really moved on from their relationship, their strong connection is manifested throughout both shows til their ends. It was difficult to me to begin season 4, because I knew the show without Bangel and Angel will never be the same again, but knowing he shows up in every Buffy season anyway (apart from the worst one: season 6) was really comforting, and the episode 'I'll Remember You' from Angel series is everything to me. Once again there's truly no competition for Buffy&Angel. Plus, both Sarah & David are totally with us on this ♥

That's what I mean: it isn't realistic. In real life, the person who's like Spike wouldn't be able to get a soul and magically fix things.

And some of them get a bit hypocritical about Spike too. They love pointing out that he loved Buffy while soulless and the things he did for her before season 7, but when you point out the attempted rape they say "but he was soulless!" I just see the ensouled versions of both Spike and Angel as completely different people, so you can't blame the soul for what the soulless demon did but you can't credit either.

It was difficult for me too. I pretty much forced myself to stop moping about missing Angel, because I cared about the rest of the characters enough to want to continue, and I knew I'd make myself hate it all otherwise.

It isn't just Sarah and David. There's a quote from James Marsters too which says he knew Buffy loved Angel more, or something along those lines (I can't remember much more than the interpretation, but it might be listed in an article here). When even the actor who portrays the rival love interest says something like that, it's pretty plain.

Spuffy fans will find any excuse to defend Spike, no matter how lame that excuse will be. I happen to ship some pairings from the other shows which were doomed since the beginning (actually one pairing like that: Lex & Lana from Smallville), and I always try to explain people properly why I love this couple and why I think they loved each other, but I never do it no matter what i never create something that is just not there. If the character made some serious mistakes I don't hide it, and I don't seek for a lame excuse just to defend him. I wish Spuffy fans were able to admit they ship an abusive relationship, and that for most of its time it's wrong and destructive but they just like it the way it is. Instead they create 'the whole new story.'

I've heard that James Marsters really did not like Spuffy, and for him it was just wrong. That made me to love him even more;)

To defend Spuffy fans, I think it's the season 7 relationship that the majority of them ship. Most do admit the season 6 one was unhealthy (but as I said, they use his lack of soul as an excuse). Season 7 did exist - Joss Whedon confirmed it, he said that Buffy meant it when she told Spike she loved him in Chosen. But it was weak in comparison to Bangel.

I found them really depressing over entire season 6. I think that was the season I don't think I would let to watch my own child (if I had one:P) til turning 16. I mean it was just wrong from top to bottom I would even call it disgusting at times. However I'm fair and I'll admit they had nice moments in season 7, and for that I can understand they found their shippers, even though it's still weak comparing with Bangel, I can understand people got to like them because of season 7 but not 6.

The other thing is probably many Spuffy stans are also Cangel fans, they like the pairing because it makes the room for the other.

Not so much mad at Angel but mad at the other characters for encouraging the idea, and in reality mad at the writers for forcing Cangel.
