Sometimes it's great to be a bookseller.
B.E.A. (which I didn't go to, alas) has passed and our book buyers have come back with some great ARCs in their suitcases and begun to share the book love. The eagerly-awaited segundo book to The Hunger Games is in my hands, as well as Jeannette Wall's new "true-life novel". I was also happily surprised sa pamamagitan ng a new book in a new series sa pamamagitan ng Cinda Williams Chima, may-akda of the Heir trilogy (The Warrior Heir; The Wizard Heir; The Dragon Heir). All three are fantastic -- y'all should pick them up come Autumn 2009!
Catching Fire sa pamamagitan ng Suzanne Collins
US Release Date: September 1st, 2009
The Hunger Games are back!
"Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won sa pamamagitan ng defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss, to her horror, is the face of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge."
-Summary on the back of the book.
Sorry guys, don't want to tell you anymore than what the publishers say for fear of spoiling this awesome segundo book of The Hunger Games series. All I will say -- it doesn't disappoint!
(And apparently the film rights have already been sold for the first book....hmmmm).

The Demon King sa pamamagitan ng Cinda Williams Chima
US Release Date: October 13, 2009
"When 16-year-old Han Alister and his Clan friend Dancer encounter three underage wizards setting apoy to the sacred mountain of Hanalea, he has no idea that this event will precipitate a cascade of disasters that will threaten everything he cares about.
Han takes an amulet from one of the wizards, Micah Bayar, to prevent him from using it against them. Only later does he learn that it has an evil history—it once belonged to the Demon King, the wizard who nearly destroyed the world a millennium ago. And the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back.
Meanwhile, Princess Raisa has her own battles to fight. As heir to the throne, she’s just spent three years of relative freedom with her father’s family—riding, hunting, and working the famous Clan markets. Now court life in Fellsmarch pinches like a pair of too-small shoes.
Wars are raging to the south, and threaten to spread into the high country. After a long period of quiet, the power of the Wizard Council is once again growing. The people of the Fells are starving and close to rebellion. Now madami than ever, there’s a need for a strong queen.
But Raisa’s mother is weak and distracted sa pamamagitan ng the handsome Gavan Bayar, High Wizard of the Fells, and Raisa feels like a cage is closing around her. It's up to her and mga kaibigan to unravel the conspiracy coalescing around her before it’s too late."

Whew! Sounds complicated, doesn't it. Certainly it is, but is simultaneously interesting, engrossing and thrilling. I stayed up until I finished. Presumably the first of a saga.

Half Broke Horses sa pamamagitan ng Suzanne Collins
US Release Date: October 6, 2009
From the may-akda of the best-selling memoir The Glass Castle (unquestionably the best memoir ever written) comes a "true-life" novel" about Walls' no-nonsense, resourceful, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. Jeannette Walls tells the story of Lily Casey -- a woman who broke horses, survived flash floods, tornados, the Great Depression and personal tragedies, and was generally a female cowboy -- in a riveting and dramatic first-narrative voice. Think of a cursing, tough, red-blouse-wearing Laura Ingalls Wilder, and you'll have a cursory picture of Lily Casey.
I really enjoyed Half Broke Horses. Jeannette Walls has a gift at paglalarawan .... However, even though Half Broke Horses is a stand-alone book, I would strongly recommend pagbaba The Glass Castle first. Readers who skip it might tanong why fans are so fascinated sa pamamagitan ng Lily and why Jeannette would dedicate an entire book to her grandmother. That being said, the book itself is a wonderful read.

Again, once these books are released, you should really check them out. And if anyone else read any of these ARCs and want to talk about them (without ruining the surprises for others), send me a message!
