How come the mother, who was a strong bear at the moment, didn't get down to the aid of her daughter when she was being attacked by a bear? I think that even if she was human, her maternal instinct would have made her jump after Merida. But she just sit and moaned... doesn't make any sense.

Merida was being pretty selfish and dis-obedient towards her mother. I really don't think that she should even be considered as a DP.
