I love Mulan, sure, for saving China and turning her dad's and everyone else's expectations of what a woman is on their head --and I do notice that Rapunzel and Moana both gained renown by bringing people together, and I don't fail to see that Tiana's one admirable trait amidst the numerous issues I have with her is her ability to persevere through a landslide of trash-talk and obstacles to own her own business.
HOWEVER...
I don't like when people minimize Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella, or Ariel --- simply because they came from abusive homes and had no financial or other means to escape; didn't have a set of sword skills; and/or simply wanted a change of venue so that they didn't have to believe every single new piece of xenophobic propaganda that someone came up with.
My point is, you don't have to save your nation to be a princess.
Little girls don't have to be on the cover of Time Magazine ( Greta Thunberg) nor be world famous for a feat, just to accomplish something in their lives.
BUT, I also don't think that means every girl needs to be a hero. If a girl wants to be traditionally feminine, wants to get married, wants to have a family, that is a wonderful goal so long as it is her choice and she's not being forced into it, and it has a certain kind of heroism in itself. I don't want to see femininity portrayed as weak or wrong.
By all means, keep the badass female heroines coming because goodness I adore them, but I hope the traditionally feminine women are also celebrated and given a voice, because they deserve it.
