- People who live in areas with a lot of snow don't have the luxury to exercise outside whenever they want in the winter, and not everyone wants a gym membership. Judging by the commercial's setting, this family also lives in a region with snow; exercise equipment is a valid and practical (if not expensive) present
- Exercise is good for you. Just because a person is thin doesn't mean they're healthy. Exercising can help improve mental health, and science backs this up. The woman feeling much happier by the next year probably had something to do with an increase in energy or an overall improvement in mental health, since her size essentially stayed the same. The commercial never implied anything about beauty standards; the internet just assumed it did
