It would've been nice if he have kept his leg but that would be like the tipical dream works movie with the perfect ending, but when I saw that he have lost his leg I was like "wow I didn't spect that" when I realised that then he and toothless had something in common and I was like "awwwww"^^

it made the ending that much stronger, and really cemented the bond between Hiccup and Toothless. I was glad to see it wasn't a perfect ending for everyone :)

It made the movie so much better in that one instant, and the movie was already wonderful! It added realism.

Oh cool so I'm not the only who thought the same thing cause my sister said he should've kept it buy I felt it kinda brought him and toothless even closer. But if you think about it if his dad would've listened to him he wouldn't have lost it in the first place

I think that kinda keeps it realistic. Come on... He fell into a whole... erm... terrible blaze. Surely, he would be injured or something. Lucky for him, he has Toothless. =P Plus, it does kinda make them equal. Toothless lost part of his tail and Hiccup lost his leg.

He didn't lose it in the book, but meh, the book is almost completely different to the film save for the setting, scenario, and some characters.

well since he lost his foot, Toothless and him have more in common, Toothless lost his left tail wing, and Hiccup lost his left foot. and they both have prosthetics

He should not have lost it becuase there is no point of him losing it. I understand that he was hurt in the battle but he was falling head first

It is the mark of good writing, good plot, good movie, etc, when the directors are willing to hurt their protagonist. It takes a wild and adventurous story that is brilliant to begin with and brings it down to earth. By making the hero hurt or scared in some way it reaches out to the audience and touches them in a spot that would be otherwise impossible to make contact with. It makes a happy ending the perfect ending.

I wasn't expecting it but it was the perfect way to end the movie.

If ANY of you have actually read the books then you know that in them he doesn't lose his leg. (I haven't seen the movie...) Alvin the Treacherous did.(I'm not talking about you freya-the-cat, I know that you have read the books, so I'm congratulating you right here, CONGRATULATIONS!!)

You are obviusly stubborn of the fact that the movie aint the same as the book. Do not worry, the stubbornes grows away with age. When your old enough you can see that even if the movie isn't like the book. It's still good.

The film is a LOOSE adaptation of the book, VERY LOOSE ADAPTATION! Basically, judge it as a separate entity!

Well first i thought that he shoud've kept it but later I thought that it's maybe even better to the story- Toothless losses part of a tail and Hiccup losses his leg, when they are away from each other they cant do everything like Hiccup cant walk easy and Toothless cant fly but when they are together they are helping each other and that's sweet :3

It would've been awesome if he could've kept it, but for movie purposes it was better that he lost it. It made it un-Disney-like that way, y'know? So for him, yes it would be awesome to keep it, but for the movie, no. It made the movie more exciting and heartfelt that way. And I think it's pwnsome that both Hiccup and Toothless lost their back left leg/tail. It makes their bond so much better.

Anyway.In the beggining I though "What the Hell?", but then I understood the connection between lost leg and wing, hiccup and toothless and I loved it. :)

well Toothless lost a bit of wing and Hiccup has no foot so theyre sort of alike!!

It was disappointing but it made him seem more Viking-y.

Toothless got pay back. He couldn't save all of him. Hiccup already cut of Toothless' tail...

Gave him that swag he needed ;)
