Why did MJ have a really soft voice when he was an adult?

Cuz, apparently he had a really deep, proper male voice, but he didn't like using his real voice, so he made it sound softer for some reason, someone explain plz :)

His normal speaking voice seemed to be deep, people who knew, or met him, say he’d forget about the high voice sometimes, and talk with a deep voice. He had a 4 octave vocal range (which is extremely rare), so he could actually choose whether he wanted to sing and speak like a tenor, baritone or bass.
