Several years nakaraan I attended a screening of The Birth of a Nation at MoMA. If you haven't seen it, the movie is everything you've heard it is: a powerfully made entertainment and a sickeningly racist one. I remember slinking out of the theater afterwards wreathed in a fog of embarrassment, me and several dozen audience members all refusing to make eye contact with one another. I think we felt both repulsed sa pamamagitan ng what we had just seen and shamed sa pamamagitan ng the fact that, on some level (D.W. Griffith being a very skilled filmmaker), we had enjoyed it.
