Nagisa is the main heroine of Clannad. Although she is in her third taon in the Hikarizaka Private High School, as is Tomoya Okazaki, Nagisa is actually one taon older than her classmates since she had to repeat her third taon after an illness that lasted nine months. Her health is weak and she periodically undergoes long periods of illness ever since she was five years old. Although she doesn't remember this, she almost died due to her parents' unintended negligence. Both of them were too busy to care for her properly while she was ill, but her life was saved after Akio begged for her to become healthy again. Her paborito foods are sweet sitaw tinapay (or Anpan) and pork cutlet. Nagisa's theme is "Nagisa (渚 -Nagisa-)".

Nagisa's Role in "Clannad"
In the episode On the Hillside Path Where the seresa Blossoms Flutter, she meets Tomoya on a long burol path in front of the school. She has a strange habit of muttering the names of pagkain that she plans to eat as a way to motivate herself, such as anpan and also has a liking of a group mascot known as "Dango Daikazoku". She wants to sumali the Drama Club, however the Club was disbanded nakaraan taon after all the members graduated and no new members entered. After finding this out she and Tomoya try to re-establish the Drama Club. She does not have much self-confidence so she often needs help in order to motivate herself through the day. She lives in the Furukawa Bakery with her parents Akio and Sanae, whom she loves very much.
The major arc of the story revolves around Nagisa. In The First Step, Nagisa and Tomoya discover that they cannot mag-anunsiyo to recruit new members, having missed the deadline to do so. In order to create an officially recognized club, they find they need at least three members and a teacher pagganap as club advisor for the club, and the only one left is Koumura, who asks them to discuss with the Choir Club members.
The members of the Choir Club tell Nagisa about Rie, a member of the Choir Club who used to be a very good violin player but is unable to play a violin due to an accident. After listening to Rie's story, Nagisa gives up reestablishing drama club. Youhei Sunohara, a friend of Tomoya, is furious about the story, and decides to have a 3-on-3 basketbol match with the basketbol Team to prove that the Choir Club members cannot hide behind their handicap. This happens to be a success, since the Choir Club members decide to share Koumura with the drama club.
After Tomoya had a falling out with his father, Nagisa offers to have Tomoya ilipat into her house until things settle down, to which Tomoya agrees. Curious about Nagisa's play which is the same as the hidden world he dreamt, Tomoya tries to find about the story, which leads him to learn about the secrets behind Nagisa's sickness. Nagisa accidentally learns of the secret and becomes guilty about forcing her parents to give up their dreams. However, this changes once she falsely believes, sa pamamagitan ng accidentally knocking down some boxes, that they had ibingiay up their dreams for her. During her performance, Nagisa starts crying instead of saying her lines. After crying for a few minutes, Akio comes in and yells to to Nagisa that it's not her fault. Soon after, Sanae stands out from the crowd and and agrees with Akio. After Sanae, Tomoya comes out of the backstage and also assures Nagisa. Nagisa starts to feel better and starts the play.
The araw after, Tomoya confesses his pag-ibig to Nagisa, and she accepts. They start going out as a couple.

In the ~After Story~ arc, after enjoying some time with her mga kaibigan living a normal high school life, Nagisa succumbs to her sickness again, and is forced to repeat her third taon for the third time. She tries to re-establish the Drama Club once again, but does not succeed. However, she still manages to go to school smiling every day. After Tomoya moves into his apartment, she visits him almost every araw and cooks meals for him, keeping him company. She is always seen encouraging him to do his work even if it means that she is left on her own, such as when she waits for him to come to the Founder's Festival for madami than an hour.
When winter comes, Nagisa becomes ill once again, but not enough as to make her repeat her third taon another time. She marries Tomoya in Graduation, after he organizes a mock graduation ceremony since she could not attend the real one. She starts working in a family restaurant with Rie. In A New Family, Nagisa becomes pregnant, and they decide to name their child Ushio. In White Darkness, she enters her final months of pregnancy but she becomes sick again. Nagisa, however, successfully gives birth to her daughter, Ushio. But then because of her illness, she dies after giving birth. Ushio would suffer the same fate as her, dying from the same illness years later. She and Ushio were eventually resurrected when Tomoya wished to turn back time. He had decided to avoid his first meeting with Nagisa in order to change their fate, but couldn't let Nagisa go. In the end, sa pamamagitan ng calling out to her and proving he doesn't regret meeting her, the delivery goes well and both Nagisa and Ushio survive.
