Regina, through her teaching by Rumple was encouraged to use her hate to power her magic. Rumple, due to the Dark Curse, also used his dark emotions. Cora is the same. Magic seems to need strong emotion to come to the fore in OUaT verse and because hate is such a strong visceral emotion it's an easy one to manipulate and channel magic through. But Emma is not someone to give into her hate. She pushes all such bad emotions aside in order to get on with the job. This is in turn very counterproductive when it comes to learning magic in a very high stress situation. Emma is very afraid of how her emotions in Neverland could influence her, and she's seen the result of 'bad' magic, so to speak, in Regina, Cora and Rumple, and doesn't want to turn out like that and disappoint her son.
What no-one in the show seems to realise is that hate is not the only strong emotion. What they did know and seem to have forgotten, is the strength of love. Emma herself says it halfway through season 2: "Love is strength". Love, especially the love a mother has for her child, does not necessarily mean fluffy, soft, warm. Love does not have to mean gentle, love can be one of the fiercest emotions a person has, especially when it comes to their children. A parent can do the cruelest, most vicious and terrible things in order to keep their children safe and happy. Love burns. Emma doesn't need dark, she doesn't need hate or anger in order to use magic. She just needs to think of her natural, animal instinct to protect her child.
Why has she not thought of this yet?
I also feel as though Regina is teaching Emma magic the way Rumple taught her. And Gold isn't exactly a teacher of morals.
