Summary of episode 6.1 

Not a Heart Attack, just an Event – Parenthood – Season 6 Episode 1 – “Vegas”

Parenthood is finally back for its final, farewell season, and the season opener was a doozie.

The episode opened with Amber getting an ultrasound. She is close to completing the first trimester and the doctor is concerned that she actually wants to be pregnant. Amber seems unsure because the father is out of the picture and she is not sure this is what she wants, she resolves to think about it.

Next we see baby Aida walking for the first time. The camera then cuts to Julia and Joel in bed together and then getting ready for work. We also see Sarah making coffee for Hank – they talk about when Hank will tell Sandy (his ex-wife) and Ruby (his daughter) about Sarah.

Kristina and Adam head over to check on the status of the construction at Chambers Academy. It seems like things a pretty far behind, so they recruit some other family members to help the process along. While at the school, Max makes it clear to his parents that he doesn’t want to go to school at Chambers, he just wants to be homeschooled.

Finally we catch up with Zeek and Camille who are gardening and painting. Sarah shows up and tells Zeek that she is taking him on a surprise birthday trip to Vegas. Once there, they immediately start gambling and drinking.

Back at Hank’s apartment, Ruby and Sandy arrive. The air is very tense between everyone, and Ruby is particularly angsty.

At Chambers, lots of different family members are working on the painting, and Amber gets upset with Haddie. Kristina greets more family members at the door and even asks Joel for help with the plumbing.

In Vegas, Zeek and Sarah are having a great time playing cards when Zeek suddenly collapses out of nowhere. Sarah immediately calls her mother to update everyone as they are being rushed through the hospital. Zeek continually insists that he is fine. The doctor treating Zeek is very young and Zeek becomes very difficult to handle.

Julia receives a call from Camille – she leaves Joel in charge of the kids and heads over to her moms house. Once there, Camille dotes on her and tells Julia that she can tell that Joel really likes her. Julia is reluctant to be with Joel.

Over at Hank’s house, we see him trying to connect with Ruby over dinner. She refuses to open up to him and it is clear that he doesn’t know how to handle the situation.

At the hospital in Vegas the doctor informs Zeek that he didn’t have a heart attack, but they do not know what is wrong with him and they should continue to do tests. Zeek throws a fit and threatens to pull all the wires and tubes off of himself. After hearing about this, Adam and Crosby decide to take an impromptu trip to Vegas.

Back at Chambers, Kristina and Max are watching the paint dry. They have a heart to heart about why Max doesn’t want to go to school. She promises him that there will not be any bullying, and that the school was made for kids like him.

Haddie goes to Amber’s apartment to confront her about the altercation they had earlier. Amber tells Haddie that she is pregnant, which is why she was so moody earlier. Haddie is the first person that knows Amber is pregnant, Haddie insists that Amber should tell her mom.

Adam and Crosby arrive in Vegas; they find Sarah and tell her that Zeek is not in his room. They hurriedly look around the hotel for Zeek and find him in the casino playing cards. After some arguing, Zeek convinces his kids to stay and play with him instead of taking him to the hospital.

At Hank’s, Sandy knocks on the doors. She tells him that she actually transferred to San Francisco because Ruby was spending time with a bad group of kids; she thought moving her would be helpful. She also asks Hank for help raising Ruby because she is having so much trouble. Hank agrees, he wants to be a part of his daughter’s life.

After putting Camille to bed, Julia heads home and finds Joel doing the dishes. She thanks him for helping her out. Julia receives a message from Sarah, a picture of them playing cards in Vegas. Julia breaks down when she realizes her father is ok. The next day Joel approaches Julia at work and tells her he is ready to commit to their relationship.

Zeek gets home from Vegas and Camille tells him they are going to the doctor that afternoon. His doctor tells him the same news: they do not know what is wrong with him and will have to do some more testing to have a diagnosis.

Sarah and Hank are having breakfast together, he tells her about his deal with Sandy. Sarah seems a little unsure about the situation but reassures Hank that she is happy for him and thinks it is for the best.

It is opening day at Chambers Academy! Adam and Max talk at home – Max still does not want to go to school at Chambers, but Adam asks him to do it for his mom. At the school, Kristina is checking in all the families, and as she is doing so, Max arrives.

The episode ends with Amber and Sarah. Amber finally tells her mom that she is pregnant.
