Well, if you look at how WW2 turned out... yes, we defeated evil, but we fought in an evil way. Staying with sick mom is better.

The others have a reasonable view but I say that by joining the resistance you would save more lives than the one,being your mother, whom you may not be able to help. Beating the Nazis is ending the holoucast. That saves thousands of lives;not only one.(Mother is still indefinite)
