Now that Jesse Custer has his new great power, what is he going to do with it?
While the arrival of Jesse\'s new ability might seem like the start of a traditional hero\'s journey, that\'s not the story Preacher is telling. As star Dominic Cooper told me, "I don’t know that it’s a hero\'s journey. I think that’s why it’s so clever. It’s under the guise of a hero’s journey."
As Jesse now stands, he intends to do good by the town of Annville. The question is what he decides to do when he realizes the full extent of his ability.
"I believe this gift that I have I am now going to use totally to the benefit of this small town that I’ve promised I will save," Cooper said of Jesse\'s mindset.
Though he\'s knowledgable of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon\'s Preacher comics, Cooper is letting the TV show\'s writers guide him on Jesse\'s evolution instead of assuming he knows what\'s coming.
"I’m new to learning what the writers’ ideas are. All I can do is play in the moment," he said. "It’s kind of good I don’t know too much because I’m playing it as though I have this thing that is complex and very difficult to deal with, the enormity of it, but I don’t truly know what it is — but I think I do. And I think I do at the moment. I think I can use this to its advantage and to the good of mankind. It’s obviously perhaps not that. That’s been really interesting to work on."
He said of the comparison between the comics and the show, "I have read the comics, but I don’t really know. It feels very different to me. They just have an abundance of the most fascinating people in this environment at the moment. They’re clever enough to create a very interesting world which they will exist in."
That said, Cooper is letting one major thing guide his portrayal of Jesse: his dark past.
"That’s huge for him," said Cooper. "That informs everything, every decision. His desire to make good when he was very bad, and everything he feels guilty about. That’s all his darkness. It’s absolutely at the core of who he is."
Preacher airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
