I can’t really describe it, it’s just like you can believe they’re truly Romeo and Juliet whereas with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes I just feel that. In the 1996 version, I felt like all the machine guys and modernization were a real distraction from the innocence and beauty with which the story was intended. DiCaprio is a great actor and he portrayed Romeo pretty well, but the chemistry between him and Claire Danes was wrong. It didn't feel natural, and in spite of Leo's acting skills, I found the passion not-so-believable. Maybe it was the age of the actors, or maybe I just pictured Juliet to be a little less levelheaded and more infatuated due to the fact that she's supposed to be thirteen. In the 1968 version, we see that sometimes simplicity is the best. It followed the play flawlessly (except for a few details, like Romeo killing Paris in the monument), and the chemistry was perfect! Whiting and Hussey were great for their roles, and I could see the passion all the way through. Left me teary-eyed and with a much firmer understanding of Shakespeare's theme of teenage love at first sight. One of my favourite movies of all time! posted sa loob ng isang taon na ang nakalipas.
