The first TV spot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens just came out, and even though it only runs to 30 seconds, there\'s a lot to discuss, especially the hints regarding Rey\'s parentage.
Of course it\'s all speculation right now, but there\'s definitely a risk of potential spoilers down below and in the video above.
0:02 – The Millennium Falcon flies over a lake on a verdant planet we believe is called Takodana.
Why? The planet\'s name appears on the character entry for the protocol droid ME-8D9 on the Star Wars Databank (the official encyclopaedia). ME-8D9 is also known as "Emmie by the unallied scoundrels on Takodana." The entry was added to the databank around the same time as descriptions for more high-profile characters like Kylo Ren and Rey, suggesting ME-8D9 is also from The Force Awakens.
Now here\'s the interpretive leap. We know Maz Kanata (Lupita N\'yongo) is a pirate who harbours various scoundrels in her castle. Now ME-8D9 is rumoured to be the name of the droid which appeared in Vanity Fair\'s photoshoot which depicted the scum and villainy found in Kanata\'s castle.
So if that is ME-8D9, and that is Kanata\'s castle the Falcon is flying towards, we\'re on Takodana. I told you there\'d be plenty of speculation.
0:04 – We also reckon the voice over is Kanata, speaking to whomever is aboard the Falcon heading to her castle. Based on recent footage, we\'re thinking it\'s at least Finn, Rey, Han, and possibly Chewie.
The dialogue underpins this spot and is really intriguing:
“ I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people. I see your eyes. I know your eyes."
We don\'t know for certain who\'s being addressed here, though it\'s heavily implied that it is Rey (she\'s the focus of the entire spot). And the dialogue begins over this image of Rey on Jakku...
...before transitioning to a position of Han on what could be the unidentified snow planet which we\'ve seen the First Order assembling its army.
The cut between Rey and Han obviously implies a connection between the characters, and it\'s tempting to infer the two characters are related, if you take the dialogue literally. But before we jump to conclusions, there\'s definitely a more figurative interpretation of Kanata\'s words. What if she simply sees in Rey\'s eyes (if that\'s who she\'s speaking to) the same hope and defiance she\'s seen in others before.
0:08 – The figurative interpretation gains a bit more weight as the shot segues to a scene in which Finn and Poe silently acknowledge each other while gearing up for battle. Maybe she is talking about a quality that unites all of the Resistance? Sounds credible.
0:15 – While Kanata might be talking metaphorically, it also feels like she sees something more definite, more tangible in the eyes of Rey: "I
your eyes." That dialogue resounds over the image below, and it definitely seems like Kanata has moved from general observation to discerning the likeness of someone she once knew.
0:15 – Rey looks to the skies and sees TIE Fighters and First Order Transporters fly overhead. Interestingly, the First Order Transporter LEGO set is the only one which contains the Captain Phasma minifigure – could this possibly be her preferred mode of transport?
0:17 – Rey shows herself to be very capable as a fighter, using her staff to take on someone at the market on Jakku. Why are they fighting? Has a deal gone sour?
0:18 – 6 X-Wings in formation fly over a huge structure. With the snow-capped mountains in the background, it\'s possible this is Starkiller Base which is built into the ice planet we\'ve seen in several trailers.
0:19 – The Millennium Falcon is pursued by a TIE Fighter in what we think is the crashed Star Destroyer (The Inflictor) on Jakku, following on from the chase which we saw at the end of the initial teaser trailer.
0:25 – Here the editing implies that Rey is firing her blaster at Kylo Ren in this sequence. We know from the Japanese trailer released a couple of days back, that at some point Ren has Rey down her knees, as if he is about to execute her. Is this the encounter that precedes that moment?
0:26 – The TV Spot ends with Rey flying the Millennium Falcon. If you\'re one of those who subscribe to the theory Solo is her father, you\'ll probably want to save the image below.
0:26 – The TV Spot ends with the Millennium Falcon – which the editing implies is being flown by Rey – crashing through a snowy forest. The fact the Falcon smashes through the forest implies a quick, messy getaway. But what are they running from?
Incidentally, we think it\'s safe to assume this is also the location for Finn\'s lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren.
Is Rey the daughter of Han Solo? It\'s definitely possible to take that away from the teaser, but surely it\'s too obvious, too on-the-nose. And even if she isn\'t a solo, it doesn\'t entirely rule out the possibility of her being a Skywalker.
Is there anything we missed? Let us know in the comments below.
