Does anyone know if Gaston Leroux actually sinabi the phantom existed on his deathbed?

I've seen this rumor floating around several threads and I was wondering if anyone has any substantial knowledge to back this up or if someone could link me to madami info. I'm Pagsulat a paper on this and any help would be greatly appreciated. I've looked around but I really can't find any information on it.

I've heard this rumor too, but I don't think there's anything to substantiate it. If Leroux possibly did base Erik on someone it most likely wouldn't be all of his characteristics. Like it could have been someone he knew or knew of that was very talented and maybe somewhat eccentric, or he could have combined two people like Joseph Marick aka the elepante man and the aforementioned example.
