It's not that he couldn't give her a good life. He was not destitute by any stretch of the imagination, and he could have continued to advance her career in ways that Raoul never could. In the novel he swore up and down that he would be as 'gentle as a lamb' and that she could 'do whatever she wished with [him]'. He'd gone as far to create a mask that he could wear in public and look mostly normal in. He would have done anything to please her, and that is why he ultimately let her go. He knew that though she cared for him, she did not love him in the way she loved Raoul. Although he could have kept her in comfort, she would never have been truly happy.

I say she loved him, but when he took her back to the cavern she was frightened, and he shocked her by being so cruel to Raoul(although that pansy deserved it) but she did love him, u can see she did

I think that Christine loved him, just not as much as Raoul. She kissed him to show him that he wasn't alone and he realized that he couldn't keep her here, he loved her so he let her go.

I'm totally agree with emmysuperfan, Christine and Erik do love each other very much with some complication in it. And when Christine kisses him twice and she also hugd him, Erik was overwhelmed with emotions. So that's probably why he let her go. :-)

He couldn't give her the life she *needed* He realized she truly didn't love him and that she was staying to save Raoul's life. He also, for the first time in his life, learned what it meant to truly love someone, and that you have to put their happiness and well-being before your own. He let her go, for her. It's the best thing he ever did.

If I were her I'd stay myself I wouldn't want to be caught anywhere with Raoul as here's a character I've never had much time for.
