At the end of its first television run, the sci-fi drama enlisted a parade of familiar faces in the race to save Mulder (David Duchovny) from execution — and not all of them were still among the living. Krycek and X both appeared to Mulder (as hallucinations? Ghosts? Can a ghost open a door?) to advise him throughout his trial, but the most devastating return had to be the Lone Gunmen. Mulder’s old friends came to him on the side of the road and urged him to head for the border with Scully (Gillian Anderson). Until then, he hadn’t even known they were dead.
