She’d taken the hoverboard that Mercy had left behind in their fight. She’d disabled the trackers already, but there was a lingering feeling in her gut that they’d know she was coming anyway.
The board had an autopilot feature, so she used it, latching her feet onto the bottom. The wind whipped at her face as she passed sa pamamagitan ng houses and other buildings. I’m not ready, it suddenly dawned on her why she was so queasy and unsure. She wasn’t ready to face off against the people she’d been with for months. She already thought of Dinah as an aunt, and Clark, even when he was being an ass, was like an uncle. And Bruce was a segundo father.
Even if they were clones, there was no way she would be able to do this without regrets.
My god... she thought, and closed her eyes, feeling the cool, moist air. How did this all happen? Fin lapsed into memories as she shot off and the sun set, covering the sky in kahel darkness.
Flashback: The araw Savage took over...
Batman zeta’d out with the rest of the Leaguers, leaving the team and Red Tornado behind. The team launched into a large conversation about why Red palaso had betrayed them. There was a point in which Tornado had to talk to the original team, excluding Artemis and Robin, alone. Fin kept the link up while the others were gone, and they continued talking, but in the middle, Fin stopped. Robin and Delta stared at her.
“I just realized. Batman called us kids.”
The members in the room’s eyes widened, and they all looked to where Tornado and the rest had disappeared. The zeta beam suddenly announced Roy’s arrival, and the team turned to the tube, no one bothering to get into a fighting position. “What did they tell you?” he whispered.
Fin shook her head. “You can talk normal, Belle taught me how to make silence shields.”
“What did they tell you?!” he demanded, much louder now.
“They sinabi you were a clone--”
“True. Cadmus programmed me.”
“You were the mole--”
“True.”
“And Batman sinabi he’d apprehended Savage, and that you were the threat now.”
“Shit. That’s false, very, very false. He didn’t defeat Savage at all. Savage--”
The world nearly exploded on them. Suddenly their minds were all crushed at once, Fin’s being the most affected. She screeched and noticed M’gann’s presence doing the damage. “Meg--Megan! What are you-- argh!”
Wally was dashing around, placing little pieces of... who knows what on people’s necks. No one could avoid it... except the three that had randomly disappeared into thin air.
Delta, Robin and Fin all sat in the rafters, watching the scene unfold before them. Fin was clutching her head and trying her best not to whimper-- M’gann had hit her hard. But she’d managed to put up a mental block so Megan couldn’t affect them again. Robin somehow (no one would know, with him) had snagged one of the things Wally had been placing on people. “It’s the things the team took from Cheshire,” he whispered. Fin took one and looked madami closely. She squinted and gasped. “Dude, I think it’s like, mind control!”
Delta shook her head, but it was hesitant. “Is that... possible?”
Robin shrugged. “Apparently.”
Fin suddenly heard a sound from off to her right, and she almost lit her hand on fire. Almost. The tell-tale swish of a, well, tail, alerted her that it was probably one of the Pusa on the team.
She guessed correctly, coming face-to-face with Scott. He grimaced, looking down at the scene below them. “What do we do--”
Fin slapped a hand over his mouth, nodding towards Superboy. Telepathically she explained that her shields were spazzing out and she couldn’t protect them much from his super-hearing. Robin stared at her, asking what they were going to do now, and Delta nodded towards the zeta beams.
That’s our way out. It has to be.
Fin bit her lip, and thought this through. Eventually she nodded, fully aware of the dangers she was putting her family and friend in. Scott smiled, crawled on the beam as close as he could to the exit, and waited for the exact right moment.
And it came. The four of them leapt off the beams and landed lightly on the ground, making their way as quickly as possible to the zeta tubes. It was a few feet away, Fin was already instinctively reaching out to the wall.
A loud screech stopped her and the others, forcing them all to their knees, and for Scott he was wincing even madami than the others. Fin forced a hand up and attempted a shield, creating a very weak one, but it was draining her nonetheless. “Robin,” she managed, gritting her teeth and stabilizing herself with her free hand. “Do the zetas still work?”
He blinked a couple of times before rolling up onto his feet and bringing up the holographic computer on his wrist. After a couple of aggravatingly painful segundos for Fin, he replied the affirmative. “But,” he continued, “they’re a little messed up. I don’t know if we’ll get out safely, especially if we go altogether.”
Fin winced visibly and he bit his lip. “We’ll take the chance,” Delta decided and helped Scott to his feet. She then propelled him over to one of the tubes, setting him down only to go reach her sister, who was gasping. She was almost completely drained of energy, almost collapsing on the spot. “I think it’s something in the air,” Fin explained breathlessly. Dinah finally stopped screaming for the moment, and Fin sighed in momentary relief as she dropped the sound shield. Her relief was short-lived as Wally came racing towards them, the rest of the team in tow. Delta dropped a couple of smoke pellets and the four remaining entered the zetas. “Now, Robin!” Scott nearly screamed, and Robin punched in the code. The zeta lit up and began recognizing them all until Dinah began screaming again. Fin wanted so badly to scream at her, to shout at her, to force her to listen, please, snap out of it, but she couldn’t. So she simply plugged her ears, but not before she heard a female computerized voice state:
“Zeta Beam Malfunction. Sending Robin and Delta to Watchtower.”
“What?” she heard Delta and Robin yelp, and then everything went blurry, the white of the zeta fading to black.
End Flashback
The wind still whipping at her face, Fin jolted herself out of her memories, her eyes snapping open to find out where she was. She realized that she was getting extremely close to the Hall, so she swerved left to go around. She still had to make up a plan, she noted to herself, and she may need to go back to Gotham for a couple things. She had a little bit of time...
She hoped.
