In all seriousness, I do find this a little amusing because Twilight would be the fantasy/romance genre, not the scifi genre. Although I do agree with it being really, really bad.

Well, the point was to broker a peace between the Trekkies and Star Wars fans, because they're at each other's throats a lot. The best way to do that is to find a common enemy that they can come together and fight. And in George Takei's mind, there's no better common enemy of geekdom at large than Twilight.

They're battling Twilight in order to get back to a simpler time when the age old question, "Who has the most dedicated fans? Star Wars or Star Trek?" did not include "Twilight" as an option.

I know this is just for humor, but the entire idea that people should bring down other fandoms in order to show loyalty to their own is a bit pretentious and disheartening. It makes no sense, unless that's what the subject of your loyalty advocates.

I think that's exactly one reason Takei made this video. You watch Shatner and Fisher really tearing the other fandom apart in the beginning. I think he was just trying to bring some levity to the situation. I doubt he really intends to start a war against any other fandom. He was just trying to stop one that his own fandom (Star Trek for those not in the know) was in with some humor.

But you do have a good point.
