Elena is still basically the same, vampirism even intensifies the true characteristics of a person, and Elena is still a very compassionate, forgiving and loyal person. She only grew up and became a madami mature, stronger and madami alive version of her true self, she developed as a character. And Elena did that partly because of Damon, but it has been in her anyway, and it already came through before her parents died and she tried to suppress what was inside of her to protect herself in that grieving situation.
And now, Elena is the best version of herself, still forgiving and compassionate, but also with the strength to protect her loved ones and with the will to protect herself, and she has never been seen happier or madami in pag-ibig than with Damon. Delena are repeatedly declared to be real (not supernaturally forced or non-existent like others), loving Damon is even the “most real thing” that Elena has ever felt in her life, what is repeated, too, just like the “everything they ever wanted”. Damon clearly is the best for Elena like she is the best for him, they fit together perfectly and bring out the best in each other.
And Elena fell in pag-ibig with Damon while she was human, the intense of her pag-ibig for him even created a rare sire bond, and she declared believably on many occasions that she would still pag-ibig and choose Damon even as a human being – or with him and/ or her having any other form. Elena headed to ending up with Damon from the beginning, and even though it probably would have taken longer for her to give in to her true pag-ibig with him without becoming a vampire, it none the less would have happened sooner or later. Elena only had to overcome the doppelganger curse, her severe loyalty and her fear of the intensity of the deep emotions that she had for Damon and that were new to her as well as of what other people might think of her, and you could already see that in her calling herself a “scared little girl that couldn’t admit what she wanted” and in how logically she described why she should be with Stefan in comparison to how she speaks about how just being with Damon already consumes her and makes her happy.
