Are waffles square or round?

I was in school kids were fighting over whether waffles were square or round. They were also saying it was the pagtatalo of the century. Even though I've only had round waffles, I'm thinking What's the point, and all it really did to me was make me want waffles.

Belgian waffles are normally rectangular in shape. American waffles vary; they can be round or rectangular. Dutch syrup waffles are round. I'm sure there are other types of waffles out there that are other shapes, too.
