I just feel like there's more variety and the stories are more in-depth/developed.
But I like western animation and some definitely has this too, just not quite on the same scale in my opinion.

Also, something I just thought of, the mature anime out there actually have great themes and something to really ponder. A lot of western mature cartoons are mainly crude humour. For the most part at least.

American cartoons are typically too dull and childish for me. I know a lot of cartoons in the U.S. can have serious overtones nowadays, but the plot and characters just don't do it for me. To me, anime is like watching a movie adaption of a book, whereas American cartoons are more to me like homemade movies based on a 14-year-old's fanfiction (I can't think of any other way to describe it). There are exceptions though, such as Avatar - I like stories that run like Avatar, not stories that run like Adventure Time.

Better and more diverse art style, can be childish or just super dark, more variety, sticks to me a lot more, can just be outright silly and crazy, etc.
Idk, Japanese cartoons just seem too alike to each other sometimes. Some anime just have too much episodes that are just too similar to each other. For some reason, a lot of anime have some sort of almost standard art style with a few differences, but not to the extent of western cartoons. Ed, Edd, n Eddy is one of the best cartoons with amazing animation imo. Such an interesting art style.
I seem to rewatch American Cartoons far more than Japanese cartoons. Especially since nowadays, some American cartoons are now airing 15 minutes, its a lot easier to pick favorites.
I'm looking more forward to new episodes of Rick and Morty than catching up to some anime. I could still enjoy Arthur despite being an adult; there's a few jokes that you can catch as an adult that you probably wouldn't catch as a kid.
And my favorite, don't need to read subtitles or worry about silly people that judge you for listening to dubs.

@EgoMouse actually if you take a look around, you can find a fair variety. Sure not as much as cartoons, but as somoeone who draws anime and likes to take note on the different styles, I can say there are significant differences between many.

Both! But nowadays I definitely am more interested in anime than cartoons.

Both. I have seen alot of interesting stories in both genres. If there's a good show I'll watch it.

I love both, but I feel like anime is a bit overrated.

Just how both are developing nowadays I can say for sure anime. Adventure's Time, Gumball and Chowder killed me.

Anime always and forever. But um, why is American Cartoons and Japanese Animation being compared??? Japanese Animation aka Anime isn't "technically" always kid friendly. Where as here in the U.S. it HAS to be, or the company making the show could be sued!
